In this paper first of all I am planning to look upon hunting terminology from the point of view of Language for Special Purposes, as hunting terms represent a kind of professional language, in many cases understood only by people having acquired special knowledge. In addition, in the course of the research, I would like to examine some criteria for translating texts of professional language.
Secondly another foremost task is to summarize the most essential facts about the development of hunting terms and their history in Latvia. It would be fundamental to find out the impact of languages of different nations that have ruled in Latvia for centuries on the hunting terminology. It would also be interesting to try to detect what has been done today to study this part of hunting traditions.
Thirdly it should be noted, that hunting terms are not just a part of a professional language used by some 30 thousand people in Latvia. Hunting terminology is a part of well-established traditions that have been developing for a rather long period of time and still are being practiced not only in Latvia but also in the whole world. Unfortunately today hunting is not considered to be a cherished and respected part of traditions by some people, who think it to be the remains of uncivilized world, but I would like to note that the “image of hunting has evolved” [27; 4] and that “over time it gradually became part of our culture.…
