Although there has been always concern regarding environmental issues in society, it did not manage to achieve any public attention (except for selected works on overpopulation, possible lack of food during next centuries etc.) till the beginning of the 20th century.
Due to increase of industrial activities, also pollution levels increased, which were the best evidence to ordinary people, that any human activities, especially fast growing industrialisation, are affecting environment and influencing everyone’s life. In early 1950s most of public paid attention to deadly smog episodes, which were followed in 1955 by the first international air pollution conference, which actually did not manage to achieve any success.
It has been widely recognised that only Rachel Carson’s book „ The Silent Spring“, in 1962 started environmental concerns in the society in the wide scale. During the next 20 years numerous environmental organisations were founded, among them also governmental agencies in most countries were created.
