The current situation of the environment we are facing today is the severe climate change, limited amount of crude oil, the melting ice caps in the poles, the rising sea level and the growing of CO2 concentration that caused by all sorts of human activities. Review the history of human beings, there is no record that shows the CO2 concentration has ever reached such a high level in which we have today. 380ppm(IPCC) is the latest CO2 concentration we have in record, when people around the world continually live in their own lifestyles or way of behaviours, once the CO2 concentration reaches 450ppm (according to the prediction by IPCC) which means an increase of temperature 2 degrees Celsius that the majority believes the world would certainly be in a chaos. Sceptics of the climate change may claim the earth in the past had also reached a high level of CO2 concentration, but in fact never as intense as we are today. In 1997, Kyoto Protocol had a significant agreement with many countries over the world, which stated the total emission from 2008 to 2012 should reduce 5% then the total emission in 1990. Last year the world climate change conference held in Copenhagen was highly expected for a profound conclusion, unfortunately seldom effective countries guaranteed any promise upon the problem, therefore in result it was a failure. However, climate change is really urgent issue to be resolved in the coming future, thousands and millions of lives are threatened by the natural disasters. Finally, what kinds of method or technology would be possible solutions towards the current situation are considered as the goal.…
Nowadays, as the climate change seriously impacted the world, countries are searching for solutions to resolve or to moderate the severe situation. Scientists and specialists of the climate believe that the main cause of the climate change is the rapid growth of CO2 emission and concentration in the atmosphere. It is obvious to see natural disasters happening frequently in the recent 5 years; however, we could review the statistics of CO2 emission from the past to present in order to clarify our current situation in a scientific point of view. Furthermore, since petroleum has been dominating the automobile industry for decades and the pollution from the combustion engine had strongly damaged the environment. Therefore, sustainable or renewable energy should replace the regular form of energy, for example the gasoline, in order to both protect the environment and decelerate the change of climate. As for the purpose of the project, we will present our research as an advice to the Dutch government. To be specific, our project will focus on the applications of new technology of electric and hydrogen cars, also the changing habits for regular transportation in an amount of distance. The main reference about energy calculation of our research is from the book,” Sustainable Energy –Without the Hot Air” by David JC. MacKay published in 2009. It gave us the motivation to study and find out a probable answer for our future with practical calculations and numbers. Questions like,” Is it possible for all the people in The Netherlands to use clean energy in transportation, is there enough renewable energy to meet the demands or is the source of renewable energy produced in a sustainable way?” could be answered in the report. Therefore, after fetching massive statistics, we will compare renewable energy with regular energy transport in several aspects like Energy Consumption, Efficiency, Emissions (from the head source, manufacturing to completion) and Finance in order to present a comprehensive knowledge to the Dutch government.
