Kuldiga is a small, nice town in Kurzeme. It is located 155 kilometers far from Riga, between two rivers – small Alex River and big and wide Venta. Kuldiga is very old town too, one of the oldest in the Baltic States. It is mentioned for the first time in written materials in 1242. This town is a heart of Kurzeme. In this town you can see very beautiful architecture, romantic, narrow streets, and kind people. Ventas Rumba, which is the widest waterfall in the whole Europe, is in Kuldiga too. Ventas Rumba is 110 meters wide and 2 meters high. Alex River has its waterfall too and it is 4.15 meters high. Alex River flows closely by town walls, therefore Kuldiga sometimes is called Kurzeme’s Venetia.

In 1378 Kuldiga as a first in Kurzeme got a town state.
Kuldiga is the most beautiful Middle Ages town of Latvia.
In 1398 Kuldiga became a member city of Hansa Union.
In the end of 19th century in Kuldiga first enterprises were created - Factory of needles “Meteors” (1860), leather factory (1875), matches factory “Vulkans” (1878), wool factory (1885).
In 1886 the Teachers Seminar was moved from Riga to Kuldiga, many of its educates had done very important things in many culture life areas.
In 1926 the building of Skrunda road was started
In 1935 Liepaja railway line was opened
