The Baltic Sea and Fish Resources in Latvia

Like all member states Latvia receives funding for its fisheries and aquaculture sector from the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG).
Financial means for fisheries (from FIFG) are allocated for the following measures:
modernization of fishing fleet;
improvement of fishery and aquaculture product processing and marketing;
Support of market participators and producer organizations;

Opportunities and losses after Latvia’s accession to the EU - Fisheries
Benefits:
Possibility to receive the financing from FIFG;
possibility for the Latvian fishing vessels to fish in the economic zone waters of other EU Member States;
Losses:
In case of decrease in fish stocks in the Baltic Sea, the FIFG means could be utilized in active fishing for reduction of the number of fishing vessels;
arrival of the EU fishing vessels in the Latvian waters may negatively impact fish resources;…
