George Armitstead III

Step by step Riga and Latvia try to return its special debt to the Armitstead family. In 1997 G. Armitstead’s 150th anniversary was celebrated and his granddaughter’s memory book was published. In 2007 the statue of George Armitstead, his wife and their pet, was set up on the banks of the city canal. And this year his museum was established in Jaunmoku castle.

In October 29 in the Opera square where G. Armitstead’s monument lies, his 160th anniversary was celebrated with the presence of his great - grandson, Riga council members, foreign and Latvian guests. The anniversary was like a reminder to the citizens of Riga about the work and contribution in the city development from the greatest mayor that Riga has had.
