In my following essay I am going to concentrate my attention on the following part of “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë: Catherine’s marriage with Edgar Linton and her still unrestful, pulsating with demonic heart towards Heathcliff. Why? Was it love, or more likely a blind affection towards infernal creature possessing powers of devil? Was it his kindness or more likely dissatisfaction with life and others that made her feel as still a part of his being? In a word, I am going to analyze Catherine’s emotions while being awife of Edgar Linton, although never being his part. I am going to follow her emotions starting from the day of her marriage (the beginning of her life’s end), from the day when Heathcliff disappeared till he came back, till the very end, which came very soon, in a couple of years after that.
Needless to tell even the contents of the most famous love story ever, but it is still necessary to mention the main occasions in life of the tenants of Wuthering Heights. Catherine Earnshaw was brought up in poverty in Wuthering Heights together with her “brother” Heathcliff, who was a gypsy waif found on the streets of Liverpool by Catherine’s father. The gypsy was not loved by any tenant of the house except for Catherine, who was more than his sister. She loved him, as his mother would do. Their childhood was shared. Heathcliff lacked love, and Catherine was the only who could give that one to him. After hearing Catherine’s confession by chance that it would degrade her to marry him, Heathcliff disappeared. His absence shattered Catherine’s life. Years went by. Catherine became Mrs. Linton.…
