Why is it Important to Improve Water Quality in Lielupe River Basin

Latvia is rich of waters – lakes, rivers and underground water sources. There are two big river basins in Zemgale region – Daugava and Lielupe river basin. Main treasures of my native local municipality are Mūsa and Mēmele, which meets together in Bauska and makes one of the greatest and well known river in our country – Lielupe. Lielupe river basin consists of 250 smaller and bigger rivers as Iecava, Misa, Svēte, Mēmele, Mūsa etc. Altough Lielupe is fairly long and crosses almost all Zemgale and part of Lithuania, it has very bad problems, about which I am going to write and introduce you too.
Recently in Bauska local newspaper “Bauskas dzīve” I read article about real situation of water quality in Lielupe basin. I was quite surprised when I saw the percentages of polluted waters. 65% of Lielupe river basin waters are in very bad quality. …
