British television news now tends to be tighter and more closed a genre, not unlike drama documentary, hence criticism of the genre for its hyperbole handling of certain issues.
To conclude, my opinion is the genre of television news is an essential part of not only our daily television schedules but also our daily life. Its conventions: good or bad, are firmly cemented in the nations conscience and will be for as long as Britain remains British. There may be some disgruntlement at the Americanised style in which some programmes are dealing with serious issues and current affairs, but with the ongoing development of digital television and channels devoted solely to news, the ability to select one of many sub-genres, whether it be traditional, Americana or contemporary will soon be upon us. My final sentence poses this question: are we coming into the golden age for television news...? Who knows?
