The Naiveties of Being Young.

In the early ages, you are sheltered from the hardships of adulthood. One would like to stay young, so they try to shelter their young as long as possible from pain and suffering. This rings true in both of Hawthorne's short stories, "The Maypole of Merry Mount," and "My Kinsman, Major Molineux." The main characters in both stories were barely considered adults in their society.
