As far as the direct supervision is concerned, employees that telecommute can be held back in their career advancement. This is due to a lack of communication between the management and the telecommuter. It is very important for all employees to be able to show their employer what they are working on, what their goals are for that week, if they met them or if not, and what happened. With this lack of visibility telecommuters feel that it is hurting their chances for recognition and promotion. It is up to the company to make career advancement plane level for both traditional employees and telecommuters.
There are more than the traditional communication challenges that companies face with telecommuters. They must look beyond the physical challenges to the challenges that it places on the employees emotionally and professionally. All three of these challenges are equally important when weighing the options of telecommuting.
