CONCLUSION
Over time, information systems can become outdated, costly to maintain and enhance and, in general, fail to support the business needs of the organisation. Ideally these systems need to be upgraded to allow them to operate in a heterogeneous environment and with a variety of open systems, thereby enabling the use of the best combination of hardware and software components within each part of the enterprise. Achieving this goal is often challenging, especially when moving from a critical IS application that does not support open distributed communications. One of the first steps in such a process is to decide on the level of systems redesign that is appropriate, given business, strategic and budgetary constraints.
This report has outlined the main problems which associated with business needs and several technical considerations that have been taken into account by P&O Ferries under the legacy systems. As a result from the new system, P&O anticipates that the server consolidation and application migration project will improve their business operations and enables them to cut down other expenditure such as staffing and maintenance cost.…
