On Human Intelligence

For many centuries humans have wondered about what it is inside their noggings that makes them so much smarter than other animals.
Is it some abstract gift given to us by Creator? Is there a mind separated from the brain, that allows us to add two and two ,reflect upon cosmos and compose operas? Or did it just happen as a result of evolution through natural selection? Are we unique on the planet or do other mammals also have intelligence, though less sharply tuned?
