Maslow didn't develop his theory especially for the motivation at work but it's obvious it has implications for work situations. Managers and supervisors don't have much power to change, to improve the two lowest levels in the hierarchy of needs but on the other hand they can influence the achievement of higher level needs. They can provide staff members with opportunities for social interactions, gaining esteem, and for the fulfilment of self-realization needs, by providing them opportunities to demonstrate their full potential at work.
This theory attempts to help managers and supervisors to identify the needs within their team.
They know that not two people are exactly alike. Everyone has his/her own hierarchy of needs and then expects something different from their job.
As long as a staff member is "happy", he/she will stay in the organisation, but the day he/she won't be anymore he/she will leave.
Good managers and supervisors are the one who know all the people under their control. How to know what a person expect from his/her job if they even don't know him/her ?
