The onset of puberty determines the beginning of the adolescent stage. This generally begins around twelve to thirteen years and finishes around eighteen years, although the individual may be different. This is a period of rapid growth and development for both males and females. Males may develop a deeper voice and begin to grow facial hair, whilst females will develop breasts and begin menstruation. Socially responsible behaviour is developed during this time as strong relationships are formed, this includes romantic relationships, ultimately leading to the strive for independence. Adolescents will develop self-confidence, accept a social and gender role, accept physical appearance and personal limitations, and learn work-related skills and prepare for employment. This can be a very emotional time for many individuals and often learning to deal with such emotions can be extremely stressful.
