Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897. She didn't become interested in planes until about 1919. After she saw an aerial meet with her father, she took a 10 minute ride on a open-cockpit biplane over Los Angeles. Shortly after she began flying lessons with pioneer aviatrix Anita Snook at Kinner Field near Long Beach. She was definitely an atypical woman of her time. Not many women were interested in airplanes, and even if they were, not many went out and had flying lessons. Once she had been training for a while, she started winning every event she went to.
